|Chesapeake PCA Grabs Second Straight Shootout |
WILEY FORD, WV On Friday night, June 2nd, Derek Schwarz led the Chesapeake Region of the Porsche Club of America to their second consecutive win in the Miller Lite Cumberland Airport Autocross Series Corvette-Porsche Shootout.
The Porsche team brought entire recent history of Porsche sports cars to the event, entering a nine man team featuring the 914, 951S, four 911s, two 996s and a 993 Twin Turbo. Corvette drivers brought C4 and C5 iron to the party.
Chesapeake PCA members Schwarz, Joe Zuramski, Dennis Howard, Justin Howard, Mark Boogs, and Steve Wilson were joined by Dan Whiteman, Andy Helgeson and Jay Gyger from points west to make up Team Porsche. The 2006 Bow Tie Bunch featured the driving talents of Keith Ritter, Steve Hotchkiss, Ken Baxter, Rob Harris, Mike McCagh, Dan Walters, Al Hogan, Keith Baxter and Ned Barefoot. The assembled field represented over100 class wins in the Cumberland Autocross Series since its inception in 2003.
PAX team competition was dominated by the flying ASP class Porsches. These troublesome 911 variants grabbed the top six PAX times of the evening to keep the crystal Shootout bowl in the hands of the Old Bay Porsche clan.
Raw time King of the Hill eliminator competition drops the slowest racers two per round to reach a match race final pair between a Porsche and a Corvette. Survivors through to the Final Four were Keith Ritter and Keith Baxter for the Steel Town side and Derek Schwarz and Dan Whiteman on the Porsche side. Ritter and Schwarz advanced to the final run where Schwarz ripped off the only sub-50 second run of the evening of 49.775 to take King of the Hill Eliminator honors.
At the August Summer Sizzler, a new Shootout tradtion is set to begin when the Cumberland Airport Autocross Series hosts the first annual Cobra/Corvette Shootout.
