SCHROEDER SCORES
DOUBLE WIN IN ICEBREAKER AIRPORT AUTOCROSS
WILEY FORD, WV - Organizers envisioned the May Icebreaker Autocross
at the Cumberland Regional Airport as an early season warm-up
for the regions performance car set. Instead, they were
treated to a heated catch me if you can contest that
came down to the last run on Saturday and a dramatic race against
the rain on Sunday.
Todd Michel from Crofton, Maryland slipped his SCCA ESP class
Mustang Cobra R into the field full of Porsches and Corvettes
with little hoopla. He didnt stay unnoticed for long as
he scorched the Mark Boggs designed Saturday course with a blistering
42.958-second lap during the second run group. That run set the
mark for hot shoes Pat Gordon (Porsche 914-6), Tom Daniels (Porsche
911C2) and Fred Schroeder (Swift SE3 who followed in the last
group of the day.
Gordon appeared to have carried the days honors with a
42.427 pass using the Porsche in which his brother won the inaugural
National Road Autocross last year. But Schroeder, who also won
in Cumberland last year at the 50th Anniversary Shootout, buried
the field with a 41.446 last lap.
On Sunday, impending rain spooked the fast cars into abandoning
their usual last group tactics and lumped Saturdays front
runners together with Porsche Club of America champion Dennis
Howards now familiar yellow Porsche 996 TT and one of his
long time rivals, DC Region ASP driver Phil Dame (Corvette ZO6).
Michel, Howard and Dame kept lowering the bar for each other
in successive runs. Howard, who designed the Sunday course, eventually
covered Dame and Michel.
But Schroeder was not to be denied. The Mount Airy Missile squired
his Swift to the winning 47.639 run on the second of four attempts
and was never threatened.
Several local competitors put in strong performances during
the weekend. Josh West, Cumberland nosed his SCCA Mustang into
tenth fastest time overall on Saturday. Dave Williams, Cumberland,
surprised with 13th overall on Sunday in his Porsche 944 NA.
Drivers scoring double class wins during the two-day event included
Mike McCagh, Cumberland (AM Corvette); Bob McClure, Pittsburgh
(AS Corvette); Dave Stoner, Pittsburgh (BSP Corvette); Pete Harrison,
Cumberland (BS Honda 2000); Dave Williams, Cumberland (CSP Porsche
944); Pat Gordon, Monrovia (EM Porsche 914-6); Steve Wilson,
Frostburg (DS BMW 330ci); and Todd Michel, Crofton, (ESP Cobra
R).
