Rafferty's Fend Off Porsche Power Play
WILEY FORD, WV - Pittsburgh's Kent and Karen
Rafferty returned to Cumberland and spooked
the fastest racers in the Chesapeake Region
PCA for the second straight event at Cumberland
Regional Airport.
The Rafferty's shared their
national championship Corvette ZO6 over two
days of "spirited" friendly
competition with Kent taking Fast Time of Day
on Saturday. Wife Karen covered the
field in Sunday's event.
On Saturday, National PCA
champions Dennis Howard, Eldersburg MD -
in a 2003 Porsche 996 Twin Turbo - and Pat
Gordon, Monrovia MD, - in a full race prepared
914-6 - led the chase. Rising
Porsche talent Derek Shwartz also ran at the
front of the pack in his recently acquired
black Twin Turbo. Rob Gordon had a strong
day, finishing one spot behind brother Pat. They
were joined at the top of the leader board
by National Road/Cumberland Airport 50th Commemorative
Autocross winner Fred Schroeder, Mt. Airy MD,
but none could catch the flying Rafferty's.
In Sunday's event, with
the course direction reversed, Karen Rafferty,
a marketing executive for the Cadillac Division
of General Motors, was head and shoulders
above the field. On
this day, Schroeder and Howard both squeezed
their way into the top four, but still trailed
the National SCCA Ladies SS Division Champ
by .122 seconds when rain drops signaled the
end of competition.
Other notable performances were recorded by
first time Cumberland airport entrant Barak
Tuglu, Gaithersburg, who finished 9th both
days in his well prepped Subauru Impreza WRX
sti and SCCA Steel Cities Solo Competition
Chair Vern Anderson, Pittsburgh, who scored
a 7th and 8th position in a BWM M3.
Washington area
competitors Pat Griffith in a Pontiac Firebird
and Eric Kriemelmeyer in
a Subaru Impreza paced fifth and sixth on Sunday. Dr.
Mike McCagh was the highest placing Cumberland
area driver, grabbing 24th place on Sunday
his modified "Farm Use Only" Corvette
ZR1. The fastest car on street tires both days
was Michael Cunningham's Dodge
Neon, which finished 19th on Saturday and 16th
on Sunday.
National
Road Autosport organized and promoted the
Pumpkin Carve Autocross in coordination
with the Chesapeake Region Porsche Club of
America. The
event attracted the largest field of entrants
since the revival of motor sports at the
local airport earlier this year, a total
of 146 entries over two days of competition.
