WHITEMAN WINS FIRST CUMBERLAND HISTORICS TIME TRIAL WILEY FORD, WV West Virginian Dan Whiteman saved his best lap for last to edge out North Caroline hillclimb ace Stan Vann and grab Fast Time of the Day at the First Annual Cumberland Historics Time Trial.
Expanding the footprint of their popular autocross arena down the length of Taxiway A at Cumberland Regional Airport, event organizers attracted 18 cars to an event designed for competition cars of the between 1950 and 1980, the era of the old Cumberland Nationals Sports Car Races.
Whitemans 1978 ASP Porsche 911SC trailed Vanns 1970 CM Caldwell-Ford formula car by more than three seconds going into the last run of the event. Both drivers had been dogged by cone penalties throughout the morning until Vann laid down at clean 1:19.729 pass on his final attempt. Whitemans smooth tail-out approach to the final half of the course proved to be just enough to win, with a 1:19.047 lap.
Bob Williams beautiful 911 RSR was third. Cumberland favorite Dennis Howard from Ellicott City was fourth in 911 SC and Pittsburghs Andrew Helgeson helped Porsche cars gain four of the top five places in an orange 911E owned by Jay Gyger from the Allegheny Region Porsche Club of America.
CALDWELL FINALLY CAUGHT Stan Vanns 1970 Caldwell had been undefeated in Cumberland prior to his second place finish in the inaugural Historics event.
HISTORY IN A HANGER Steve Limberts FIA endurance championship winning 914-6 was displayed during a charity dinner in the Cumberland Airport corporate hanger.
