FAMILIAR FACES AND NEW CONTENDERS BATTLE AT
HARVEST MOON AUTOCROSS
WILEY FORD, WV The recent Harvest
Moon Autocross featured several races within a race
as a field of familiar faces and new contenders battled on the
fifth stop in the six event Miller Lite Cumberland Airport Autocross
Series.
Alexandria, VA rocket Bob Williams collected double
honors. His exotic retro-mod Porsche 911RS earned the Top Gun
Eliminator trophy in a rescheduled Porsche Corvette Shoot Out
on Saturday and returned on Sunday to grab Fast Time of the Day
(FTD).
The Cumberland Airport Corvette crew captured their
second straight shoot-out team title in as many months, topping
the eight fastest Porsches of the Chesapeake Region PCA in PAX
handicap time competition before conceding the Eliminator round
to Williams and giant killer finalist Bill Smith IV (Porsche 914-6)
from Keyser, WV.
The weekend also set up a down-to-the-wire October
finale for the Cumberland Cobra Cup. Last years winner Wade
Chamberlain trailed in Cup points all season, but was the fastest
XP class Cobra both Harvest Moon days, edging ahead of rising
Capital Area Cobra Club racers Fred Kelly, Laurence Casey and
Tink Phillips for the hotly contested club title.
Things also heated up in Street Mod with the addition
of DC area drivers Pete Appell and Steve Pilkerton, ESP with the
appearance of central PA Mustang driver Dan Ireland and SS, which
saw strong performances by Phil Dame, Les Davis and Cheapeake
Porsche track driving instructor Adam Argenbright.
On Saturday, local Reynard-Ford driver Matt Felten
continued his excellent 2007 season, nipping Williams by .760
seconds for FTD. The heated points battle between the Cobra trio
of Chamberlain, Casey and Phillips carried them into the remainder
of the Saturday Top 5.
On Sunday, Jim Harris (SS Corvette ZO6) followed
Williams, marking the affable Virginian Harris best overall
Cumberland finish to date. Chamberlain was third, followed by
Kelley. Les Davis (SS Corvette ZO6) from Raleigh, NC rounded out
the Top 5.
Double winners in contested classes for the weekend
included Harris (SS), Buddy Haines (BS Nissan), Richard Biancone
(BS Datsun), Larry Zadjel (DS Audi), Rob Robeson (HS Dodge), Alex
Kelley (CSP Mazda), Marcus Houser (DSP Dodge), Bill Smith IV (EM
Porsche), Paul Przyborski (ST BMW), Bob Williams (SM2 Porsche)
and Chamberlain (XP FFR Cobra).
